Bard e i dintorni
Bard is located at 381 meters above sea level, and is situated in the narrowest part of the Valle d'Aosta, where the rocks descend steeply towards the Dora Baltea.At this point, the river makes a meander, from where on the top of the rock stands the famous Fort. The medieval village of Bard is one of the most suggestive of the whole valley, as, since ancient times, due to its strategic position, it has always been a safe bulwark against invasions, and it still preserves the arched style rich in mullioned windows with cross windows. The Fort that is still visible was built around the year 1000, on previous buildings whose foundations were made by the Romans.
The medieval village of Bard is one of the most evocative and best preserved of the entire Aosta Valley; since ancient times, due to its strategic position, it has always been a safe bulwark against invasions, and still preserves the style of arches rich in mullioned windows with cross windows. In the village it is possible to admire monumental houses of rare beauty, such as the House of the Bishop, House of the Sundial, Valperga House, Challant House, Ciucca House, and the elegant palace of the nobles Nicole, the last Counts of Bard.
On the rock that overlooks the village, stands the imposing Fortress of Bard, which was built around the year 1000, on previous buildings whose foundations were made by the Romans. Expertly restored, it is now a museum and cultural center of all respect. With its "Museum of the Alps", temporary exhibitions and numerous events, it attracts thousands of visitors every year.
